Community development, redevelopment, economic development. From growing healthy businesses to creating prosperous communities these are terms whose actions pack a lot of impact. Jane and Dean White of California Physician Reimbursement (CPR) see revitalization of the downtown Redding core as a key to opening the door.

When the White’s multi-specialty medical billing service grew to the point where they didn’t have enough space to add additional staff, they began looking for a new location that would carry them well into the future. They took a gamble, purchasing the obsolete Greyhound bus terminal in downtown Redding. The architecture was unique and the Whites’ hoped to restore the building and convert it to professional office space. But the structure was just too old and too tired, making it cost prohibitive to renovate.

I really wanted to do the right thing for downtown.

They turned to Cornerstone Community Bank and SCED’s 504 loan program. The old building was razed and plans drawn for a new two-story mixed use building that would house their business on the top floor, along with two market-rate housing units. The bottom floor became home to retail/office space and the tied house of a local brewery.

CPR brought 75 employees “downtown” to work and support other businesses. New amenities including a bike locker and cyber break room were incorporated into the building, while retaining items such as an original chandelier to honor the history of the Greyhound Building.
